According to POLITICO, Chinese government representatives are changing their minds about a long-planned face-to-face meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and American President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Bali next month.
According to a person familiar with the planning, Beijing won’t interact with U.S. officials seeking to create an agenda for the meeting, which could prevent it from taking place at all.
The highly anticipated encounter has been considered as a chance for Biden and Xi to diffuse the tense bilateral enmity that has grown in recent years between the United States and China.
However, recent U.S. actions on those same issues, including President Biden’s recent pledge of a U.S. military defense of Taiwan in the event of an invasion by China, and export restrictions on semiconductors required for next-generation weapon systems, have enraged China to the point where it is considering withdrawing.
