Hundreds of catalytic converter anti-theft kits are distributed by Boulder Police.

In an effort to combat one of Colorado’s fastest-growing crimes, catalytic converter theft, the Boulder Police Department distributed hundreds of anti-theft kits for catalytic converters on Saturday.

Catalytic converters contain highly valuable metals, and thieves can profit by stealing and selling them for thousands of dollars.

According to Mitch Trujillo, the community services officer for the Boulder Police Department, “they can sometimes earn a couple hundred bucks from those metals and that’s just for a couple minutes labor.” It turns out to be quite beneficial for a thief.

Depending on the type of automobile, replacing it might also be costly for owners.

Trujillo estimated the cost of replacement at between $2,000 and $4,000.

A Denver7 investigation earlier this year found thieves stole nearly 4,000 catalytic converters since 2020 in Denver and Boulder alone.

People like Darren Carbary are becoming very concerned about these incidents.
