Police in Oregon were given a chaotic chase along Interstate 5 by a 75-year-old woman. When a Josephine County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop the woman for driving 112 mph, the pursuit started.
Elizabeth Katherine Essex, the woman, sped off without stopping. Deputies pursued Essex as she continued to flee from them quickly. The road was spiked when she entered Jackson County, thanks to the efforts of the deputies.
Essex blew out her tires as she sped past the spikes. She yet persisted in eluding Jackson County deputies who took over the pursuit. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies spiked her tires seven times, yet she was still able to travel nearly 17 miles without tires.
Officers eventually utilized a Pursuit Intervention Technique to halt the pursuit. After being detained, Essex is accused of reckless driving and of trying to flee from the police in a car, both felonies.
She admitted to the police that she wouldn’t stop because she “didn’t trust law enforcement” and was “scared.”
As on Monday evening, Essex was still incarcerated.
