British citizens are preparing for rolling blackouts brought on by the larger energy crisis in Europe by arming themselves with everything from generators to thermal clothing.
Last week, grid operators in the UK warned that if they cannot import enough energy or gas this winter to maintain the grid during hours of high demand, people may see pre-planned, three-hour power outages.
The U.K.’s National Grid Electricity System Operator stated in its annual Winter Outlook that, “in the unlikely event we were in this situation, it would mean that some customers could be without power for pre-defined periods during a day – normally this is anticipated to be for three-hour blocks.”
The shopping behaviors of consumers also reflect their anxieties: According to Reuters, who cited statistics from British building material merchant Toolstation, sales of generators in the U.K. have increased by a staggering 203% in the first 11 days of this month compared to the same period in October 2021. Sales of flashlights, often known as torches in the US, have increased by 43%.
Another factor indicated in buying data provided by British department store John Lewis is the importance of staying warm. The store revealed last week that its thermal underwear sales had increased by more than double from the week before.
It reported an increase in sales of heated blankets, duvets, gloves, candles, and gloves.
A Toolstation representative told Reuters that although it’s unlikely that the National Grid will have to resort to blackouts this winter, it’s clear that customers are preparing for the worst-case scenario. The spokesperson noted that the generators can be used to power appliances like lamps and fan heaters.
