Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said on Saturday that the UK is investing in new anti-drone technologies and working to identify and thwart terrorist financing.
Cleverly claimed that technological advancements have offered terrorists “new opportunities that we must combat” during a speech at a U.N. Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee meeting in New Delhi.
Terrorists “have advanced from disseminating crackly voice recordings from the depths of Tora Bora, to global web recruitment and incitement efforts, to live-stream attacks within only two decades.”
Cleverly urged U.N. counterparts to “work together to fight terrorist beliefs online” in order to prevent “online provocation and racialization of vulnerable individuals in far-off places.”
He added that the UK was a partner in the effort to refute the terrorist organization ISIS’s propaganda.
The foreign secretary added that unmanned aircraft systems of all kinds are “used to inflict fear, murder, and damage” by citing the Houthi missile strike on Abu Dhabi in January and the use of drones by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.
It was cleverly said that in order to prevent terrorists from “misusing drones,” the UK government is supporting new anti-drone technologies and collaborating with allies at the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum.
In order to “understand and disrupt terrorist funds, notably in Somalia and North Africa,” he claimed that the UK is collaborating with tech firms and foreign partners.
Additionally, he expressed excitement for November’s “No Money for Terrorism Conference” in India.
