When Amanda Knox traveled to Perugia in the heart of Italy on a student exchange, she was twenty years old. She was with her roommate, Meredith Kercher (21), who was also present.
Rafaele Solecito, a 23-year-old Italian who worked at a pub, and Amanda started dating. But on November 2, 2007, Amanda’s life underwent a permanent transformation.
The front door was open and there was dried blood in the bathroom when Amanda returned one evening to the apartment she shared with her friend Meredith. She made a police call right away. When the police arrived, they discovered Meredith Kercher, her roommate, dead and imprisoned in her room.
Amanda and her then-boyfriend were immediately convicted of stabbing 21-year-old Kercher to death in an apartment in Perugia, Italy, in 2007.
In 2009, both were found guilty, but in 2011, they were acquitted after filing an appeal with the court. In 2015, both were acquitted.
Amanda was a free woman, but forever marked by this difficult experience. She told how people stopped her on the street apologizing to her because they so quickly came to the conclusion that she was guilty of murdering her roommate.
Her escape from prison became a matter of interest to the public, as Amanda talked about how many inmates became gay “to make their stay easier,” but she refused the proposals of her cellmates. When she got out of prison, she got married and gave birth to a child. Her story was featured in a Netflix documentary.
But the mystery of Meredith Kercher’s murder remained a mystery.
Although several people have been accused, it has not yet been revealed who killed the unfortunate student.
John Kercher, Meredith Kercher’s father, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in early 2020. He was a journalist for more than 40 years and the author of more than 24 children’s books. He wrote a book about his daughter called Meredith in 2013.
He suffered a stroke in 2009 that prevented him from attending his daughter’s murder trial.
