Even though hundreds of kids continue to stay at home due to flu-like conditions, a high school in Virginia will be open.
Following reports of a “large number of student and staff illnesses” last week, Stafford High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia, canceled all of its extracurricular events and athletic competitions for the weekend. There were 1,000 absentees from the school on Friday, which has about 2,100 kids. Sandra Osborn, the district’s chief communications officer, told CBS News that 526 children, or almost a quarter of the student body, missed school on Tuesday in addition to the 670 absentees on Monday.
Although hundreds of children are still staying home from school due to flu-like conditions, a high school in Virginia will remain open.
A “large number of student and staff illnesses” were reported last week at Stafford High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which prompted the school to cancel all events and athletics scheduled from Friday through Sunday. In the school, which has about 2,100 students, there were 1,000 absences on Friday. According to Sandra Osborn, the district’s chief communications officer, 670 children missed school on Monday and another 526 pupils, or almost a quarter of the student body, missed school on Tuesday.
The district’s schools should remain open, and mitigation measures should continue, the school said on Monday, citing the Virginia Department of Health.
The school posted on Facebook that “all events involving Stafford High School students may resume Tuesday, following consultation with our health department.” “This includes extracurricular pursuits like clubs, practices, and after-school study or test preparation. Tuesday might also mark the return of athletic practices for Stafford High School pupils.”
However, interscholastic athletic competitions are still postponed on Tuesday to “minimize exposure to other schools.”
